Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH) is among the nation’s best children’s hospitals and is highly ranked nationally in six out of ten pediatric sub-specialities. The hospital has a strong record of improvement and has been nationally recognised for QI work a number of times.

The Improvement Scholars Program is a structured, experiential learning program, run by the Institute for Healthcare Quality Improvement (IHQI) at UNC School of Medicine. Improvement Scholars learn clinical improvement leadership by proposing, designing and leading a project with guidance and support from experienced clinical improvement leaders.
The IHQI leadership and coaches had been struggling to provide a standardized means of capturing staff projects, provide access to best practice improvement tools, enable collaborations across disciplines, and share access to current and past projects for learning. This was constraining the success of the projects and reducing the levels of improvement undertaken by staff after completing the program.
Since adopting Life QI, the project setup and collaboration process has been hugely streamlined, making it easier for staff to get projects started and get input from colleagues and IHQI Faculty. The IHQI leadership are also able to track in real-time the work being undertaken under the program. The feedback from staff have been extremely positive and the faculty are seeing greater levels of engagement from staff than before adopting Life QI. Life QI is now set to be used on all future Improvement Scholars cohorts.
