Challenges in Developing and Scaling Improvement Capability

Embedding and sustaining an organisation-wide quality improvement culture and practice, is like any organisational transformation programme - challenging. There are many stages in the journey to having a mature improvement capability with different challenges arising at different stages. In this guide we focus on three key challenges which generally present themselves at all points along the improvement journey.

Engaging staff in QI

  • Successfully harnessing the enthusiasm and vision of staff from across the organisation is a sure-fire way to deliver widespread improvement. It’s often one of the biggest challenges, but the evidence is clear – the most successful QI programmes are driven by a knowledgeable and motivated workforce.

Life QI helps to engage staff by:
Providing a consistent approach aligned with trust improvement strategy
Reducing the barrier to entry by keeping QI accessible in one central place
Providing visibility of, and inspiration from, successful QI from elsewhere in the trust

Building improvement skills

  • Developing the right skills at the right levels of the organisation is a crucial component in wide-spread sustainable improvement. Life QI underpins a systematic approach to building skills in the following ways:
Learn by doing with QI tools (e.g. PDSA, SPC charts)
Share best practice projects and examples
Peer-to-peer collaboration
Easily coordinate and manage your training programme

Executing and Tracking QI projects

  • Projects are likely to be at the heart of any successful QI programme. To maximise the chance of success, staff need access to centralised workspace, tools and resources. To maximise the impact, effective tracking, reporting and sharing of improvement is essential. Life QI facilitates this by:
Instilling a consistent approach and the tools to get the job done
Create projects quicker and with greater success
Share, learn and prevent recreating mistakes.
Align activity to trust priorities and track against that
Collate evidence for CQC

Case Study - Engaging staff in QI

Barts Health is building a WeImprove culture

Barts Health NHS Trust is on a mission to put quality improvement at the heart of everything staff do. ‘WeImprove’ was created to give QI its own brand and is used to run events around the trust including training days, conferences and forums – giving thousands of staff the chance to learn about the benefits of QI. In-person and virtual events are complemented by a range of digital channels that share and promote all the fantastic improvements staff work on; including: the WeImprove Twitter account, the WeImprove intranet page, and of course sharing all current and past projects on Life QI – the home of all the WeImprove projects.

CNWL empowers staff and increases QI capacity and capability

Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) underwent a major revamp of their QI strategy in 2017, kickstarting their improvement programme. The objective was to create a culture of improvement where positive change could be driven from all corners of the organisation. To achieve this, they implemented a robust approach to training staff in QI mindset and approach, using Life QI as a vehicle for that. Since then, QI has spread exponentially in the organisation and improvements delivered across all aspects of care delivery, operations and administration.
